How to Ask Someone to Be Your Bridesmaid

Bridesmaids are a huge part of what makes up your wedding party. It is an important role, and it should be played by very important people in your life. The first step is figuring out who those people are.

Consider who you would want close to you when preparing for your wedding. This could be dress shopping and fittings, the bachelorette party, listening to your vows, etc. These ladies will feel very honored to be chosen, so think about the ones who have always been by your side and show them how much they mean to you.

If someone asked you to be their bridesmaid, they are probably someone close to you. Maybe you want to reciprocate the honor. It’s not something you have to do, but it is something you should consider.

Some brides start with their family. This can be a sister, future sister-in-law, cousins, etc. These people will always be there for you and will most likely go out of their way to make sure everything goes smoothly.

Another option is to choose some close friends, who don’t necessarily have to be from now. These can be friends from other stages in your life. Maybe you have a childhood best friend that you don’t get to talk to or see often.

It might be imperative to make sure that whoever is in the party all gets along. They will have to work as a group and come together for you. So, if someone can’t be a team player, it might be best they sit this one out.

It’s about quality, not quantity. Don’t stress over how many people you have. Some brides don’t have a bridal party at all. Something to consider might be your budget. This could be for the cost of all the bridesmaids to attend, as well as if you were planning on picking up the tab for all the dresses. Otherwise, you can have as little as one or as much as ten or more. It might be more aesthetically pleasing, but don’t worry so much if you have an even number of bridesmaids and groomsmen. You can always double up when walking down the aisle.

You should try and ask people to be a bridesmaid at least 8 months to a year in advance of the wedding. They will need time to get their dress, take time off, plan a bachelorette party, and save up if it is a destination wedding. If your date is in a shorter time frame, try to tell them as soon as possible!

Think of something heartfelt, and maybe clever to say when asking them. Also think of a creative presentation. You can create a boxed arrangement of maybe sentimental items that resemble you and that person’s relationship. Or even a confetti explosion or balloon pop. If you are doing a simple text, email, phone call, or letter, make sure that the verbiage is truly special.

Whatever you decide, they are sure to be extremely happy and honored to partake in your special day!
