Writing Your Vows

When writing your vows, make sure you say, “I love you.” This might seem obvious, but you would be surprised how easy it is to accidentally leave out.

Relationships have ups and downs, it’s nice to reinforce how you will be there through thick and thin. The vows should be real and raw, so try and share some personal stories. Even if something is a little embarrassing, your guests will be sure to love it. Make promises that you know you want to and can keep. Your vows are serious commitments that your loved ones will be witnessing.

Plan your vows weeks in advance, don’t wait until the last minute. Write down everything that comes to mind when you think of your spouse, even if you don’t use it. Highlight your favorite points to get the ball rolling. You should write a few drafts and take a break from it as well. Re-visit it and see how you feel.

Of course, you can’t write everything you want (you would be there all day), so just pull out the major points. Try to leave out “always” and “never”. Don’t promise perfection since it is impossible to live up to. Just promise that you are going to try your very best!

Don’t overthink sounding too corny. If it’s from the heart it doesn’t matter. Include some humor to make them laugh and smile. Don’t forget that you can always get it going with a favorite quote, or maybe a line from a song or movie you both like.

Ask someone you trust to take a listen. You won’t want them to say anything to anyone and want everyone to be surprised. So, limit the amount of people you share it with. It will be better to hear how it sounds out loud and have another person’s opinion, though.

Absolutely do not share anything with your significant other prior. You can discuss how long the vows should be, will it be humorous, serious, or a combination, etc.

Don’t be nervous! Anything you say from the heart will be greatly appreciated and make your significant other feel like the luckiest person in the world.
